More Book Recommendations
Every few months I’ve been sharing a list of books by Black authors that have had a big impact on me.
Here are six more books - two empowering books about dealing with trauma, a powerful memoir by the founder of the “Me Too” movement, a collection of thought-provoking personal essays, and two beautiful novels I found deeply moving. The following descriptions are from the publishers.
What Happened to You? Conversations on Trauma, Resilience, and Healing by Oprah Winfrey and Bruce D. Perry
“Our earliest experiences shape our lives far down the road, and What Happened to You? provides powerful scientific and emotional insights into the behavioral patterns so many of us struggle to understand.”
My Grandmother’s Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem
“In this groundbreaking book, therapist Resmaa Menakem examines the damage caused by racism in America from the perspective of trauma and body-centered psychology.”
Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement by Tarana Burke
“From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words―me too―and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation in one of the largest cultural events in American history.”
Don’t Let It Get You Down: Essays on Race, Gender, and the Body by Savala Nolan
“A powerful and provocative collection of essays that offers poignant reflections on living between society’s most charged, politicized, and intractably polar spaces—between black and white, rich and poor, thin and fat.”
Homegoing: A Novel by Yaa Gyasi
“Ghana, eighteenth century: two half sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations.”
The Vanishing Half: A Novel by Brit Bennett
“A stunning new novel about twin sisters, inseparable as children, who ultimately choose to live in two very different worlds, one black and one white.”
