Your Three Brains

Your Three Brains

According to physicist Michio Kaku, the human brain “is the most complicated object in the known universe.”

Humans have come up with many ways to understand the different functions of the brain, such as the differentiating the subconscious, the conscious, and the superconscious.

Working with my life coaching clients, I’m finding a new way of looking at our brains to be helpful.

We can think of our brains as actually three brains, with different functions.

My daughter and husband helped me come up with names for these three brains – the Protector, the Executive, and the Sage.

The Protector brain is focused on our survival. It has all the programming from human evolution, our families, and our culture that tells us how we should behave to stay safe.

The Executive brain is our rational, planning, analytical, verbal brain. It chooses what we focus on and guides us through day-to-day life.

The Sage brain is the wise part of us that has a higher perspective on our lives.

When my clients connect with these different parts of themselves and get them working in harmony, they can more easily create the results they want in their lives.

You can do the same thing by coaching yourself.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself – in writing, in your mind, or with another person:

1)      Executive Brain Questions: What is an issue that I’m dealing with now? Or what is my biggest goal right now?

2)      Protector Brain Question: What is my worst fear about this issue or goal? Keep asking yourself until you uncover the worst fear. Then reassure the Protector about how you will handle that worst case scenario.

3)      Sage Brain Questions: What advice would I give myself from a higher perspective, such as from my future self who has resolved this issue/created this goal? Or what would I say to my best friend who is dealing with this issue/wanting to create this goal?

Try playing around with these questions and see what you come up with.
