Are You Highly Sensitive?

Are You Highly Sensitive?

Have you heard the term “highly sensitive person” (HSP)?

This trait, also called sensory processing sensitivity, was first proposed in the 1990’s by psychologist Elaine Aron.

Since then, hundreds of research studies have validated that humans (and other species) have varying degrees of responsiveness to stimuli.

According to Wikipedia:

Sensory processing sensitivity (SPS) is a temperamental or personality trait involving an increased sensitivity of the central nervous system and a deeper cognitive processing of physical, social and emotional stimuli.

Highly sensitive people (about 20% of the population) can have both strengths and challenges associated with the trait.

To get an idea of where you are on the sensitivity spectrum, answer the following questions according to the way you personally feel on a scale of 1 to 7 with 1 being “not at all” and 7 being “extremely.”

  1. Do you seem to be aware of subtleties in your environment?

  2. Are you easily overwhelmed by things like bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or sirens close by?

  3. Do you have a rich, complex inner life?

  4. Do you get rattled when you have a lot to do in a short amount of time?

  5. Are you deeply moved by the arts or music?

  6. Are you annoyed when people try to get you to do too many things at once?

  7. Do you make a point to avoid violent movies and TV shows?

  8. Do you find it unpleasant to have a lot going on at once?

  9. Do changes in your life shake you up?

  10. Do you notice and enjoy delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, works of art?

  11. Are you bothered by intense stimuli, like loud noises or chaotic scenes?

  12. When you must complete or be observed while performing a task, do you become so nervous or shaky that you do much worse than you would otherwise?

Add up your score. The higher your score, the more sensitive you are. 84 is the highest possible score and 12 is the lowest.
