The Power of Awe

The Power of Awe

When was the last time you felt awe?

Awe is that sense of wonder we get when we encounter something bigger and more amazing than our everyday experience, such as looking at spectacular nature scenery or a beautiful piece of art, listening to music that moves us to tears, seeing an inspiring act of kindness or generosity - the possibilities are endless.

Scientists have been studying awe for about twenty years and it turns out there are numerous physical and mental health benefits from experiencing awe.

According to the Greater Good Science Center, “research suggests that awe can make you happier, healthier, more humble, and more connected to the people around you.”

How can we experience more of the benefits of this powerful emotion?

  1. Seek out awe experiences - walk in nature or through an art museum, listen to music you love, watch a beautiful sunset, spend time with children who are exploring the world, seek out inspiring stories and videos online, look up at the night sky.

  2. Stop and pay attention when you’re experiencing awe - let the emotion of awe fill your mind and body.

  3. Remember past awe experiences - look at photos of your trip to the Grand Canyon, watch videos of your child’s first steps, talk with friends and families about experiences that gave you a sense of wonder.

  4. Write about your awe memories - put yourself back into the scene and write a detailed description of what you experienced and how it felt.

Bringing more awe into our lives is awesome!

Love,

Liz
