Bookend Your Days With Gratitude

Bookend Your Days With Gratitude

Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating!

Gratitude gets a lot of attention this time of year, and it’s something worth making a priority throughout the year.

Incorporating gratitude practices into our lives can have big benefits for our physical and mental health and quality of life (search “health benefits of gratitude” for research studies).

Here are two easy ways to bookend your day with gratitude:

Mornings: When you wake up, flood your brain with gratitude. Before you even open your eyes, spend a few minutes thinking of all the things you’re grateful for, such as: I’m grateful for waking up, I’m grateful for my cozy bed, for my husband sleeping beside me, for our wonderful daughter, for our home, our dog, etc.

When you flood your brain with thoughts of gratitude, it releases a cascade of positive, healing neurotransmitters throughout your body. Imagine how different that is from starting the day with thoughts such as worry, self-criticism, etc. that flood your body with stress chemistry!

Evenings: Before you go to bed, write down three things you are grateful for. Coming up with new things you’re grateful for every day will encourage your brain to stretch and start looking for things you’re grateful for throughout the day that you can write down.

Oprah has shared how this practice of keeping a gratitude journal made a big difference for her, and it can help you too.
