Coping with Uncertainty

Coping with Uncertainty

With the new COVID variant and everything else happening in our world I’ve been feeling the waves of uncertainty again, have you?

For heart centered women with high empathy, we can be particularly challenged because we feel not just our own strong emotions, but also the emotions of others around us and even in the collective.

I’ve been going back to some of my favorite practical techniques that can help to regulate our nervous systems:

  1. Come up with a reassuring mantra to use whenever you feel yourself sliding into worry and keep repeating it to yourself, such as “I am all right right now. My loved ones are all right right now.”  “In this moment I am safe and my loved ones are safe.”

  2. Be kind and gentle with yourself - these are challenging times and being hard on ourselves makes everything more difficult.

  3. Limit your news intake. Find the balance between staying informed but not overwhelmed.

  4. Spend time in nature.

  5. Walk, swim, bicycle, dance - rhythmic activity helps to regulate the nervous system.

  6. Stimulate your vagus nerve - breathe slowly and deeply, laugh, sing, hum, massage your feet, splash your face with cold water. (For more info about the vagus nerve and how to stimulate it there are lots of articles online.)

  7. Do creative activities you enjoy - art, music, dance, cooking, crafts.

  8. Spend time with people who lift you up and limit time with people who drain you.

  9. Connect with spirituality and/or anything that helps you connect with something bigger than yourself and gives your life meaning.

These are some of the techniques that helped me heal from decades of chronic illness and continue to help me cope with the uncertainties of life.
