Ten Powerful Emotions

Did you know that emotions can have a powerful effect on our physical and mental health?

HeartMath is a great organization that has been doing research on emotions for more than two decades.

They’ve discovered that emotions have either a “renewing” impact on our minds and bodies, or a “depleting” impact.

Ten of the most powerful renewing emotions are:

  • Love

  • Joy

  • Gratitude

  • Awe

  • Inspiration

  • Serenity

  • Interest

  • Hope

  • Pride

  • Amusement

When we experience any of these emotions, our brains release a flood of positive, healing neurotransmitters into our bloodstreams.

These neurotransmitters boost our mood and lead to better mental and physical health.

Stress hormones decrease, leading to improvements in things like:

  • Immune functioning

  • Memory and problem-solving

  • Creativity

Today, choose one of these renewing emotions to focus on. Some possibilities:

  • Write (or talk with a friend) about a time you remember feeling this emotion, engaging all your senses: What were you seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling, touching?

  • Imagine a time in the future when you’re feeling this emotion: What are you doing? Where are you? Who are you with? How does the emotion feel in your body?

Creating a renewing emotion in your body by remembering a time in the past or visualizing a time in the future when you are feeling it will give your body, mind, and spirit a boost!
